Jumbo carrots are scarce in the United States | Fresh Plaza
by Lakeside Marketing
The carrot market in the United States is stronger now than it has been in recent months. Especially in the case of jumbo sizes, whose offer is very limited. Suppliers explain that weather conditions have influenced this lack of larger carrots.
“The supply of larger carrots has pulled down, there is not much caliber in the fields,” says Sharon Coffelt of Amerifresh. “The product is not as large and abundant this year because of the heat and rains experienced in California throughout the season, most come from California and Mexico at this time of year. The market is improving, but prices remain high still”.

Coffelt says that the demand has been stable and that the prices are higher due to the lack of product. “Even though the market is stronger than usual right now, there are certainly few demand peaks throughout the year,” he adds. “Sometimes it rises around San Patricio, but if not, we continue to see a stable demand.”
Spot prices for medium to large carrots range between $ 15 and $ 16, while jumbo sizes are between $ 20.50 and $ 24.50.

Good demand for ecological rainbow varieties
While the demand for conventional carrots has been stable, organic producers say that the varieties of colors are still in good demand. They emphasize that the visual aspect of the product is what attracts customers.
“We have two regions of organic production in California,” says Brian Peixoto of Lakeside Organic Gardens. “In spring and summer, we grow carrots in Watsonville, but at this time of year our production moves to Holtsville, in the Imperial Valley.” The growing conditions have been very good in this region and the demand has been very stable. We produce 24-gauge carrots in orange and rainbow bunches, and we still see a very good demand for rainbow carrots, they taste the same as any other carrot, but customers like its visual appeal. “
